Local attractions and activities:
The Clocktower: Manifold Street, Camperdown. Towering 30 metres above the street, this striking Gothic style tower was built in 1896 in memory of district pioneer Thomas Manifold. The clocktower is open on the first Sunday of each month, when the craft market is held under the majestic elms.
Finlay Avenue: Two kilometre long avenue of English Elms (Ulmus Procera) runs the length of Manifold Street. The avenue is classified by the National Trust and is listed on the Register of Significant Trees of Victoria. It was planted in 1876 by district school children to honour dairy industry leaders and workers. Beneath the elms are historic monuments, statues and war memorials that commemorate the contribution and achievement of district pioneers. Barbecue and picnic facilities are also available opposite the Guide Hall.
Scenic Drive / Beach Reserve; Lake Bullen Merri & Lake Gnotuk: Off the Princes highway, two kilometers west of Camperdown or via Park Lane, the two lakes are in a twin volcanic crater, separated only by a narrow stretch of land. Lake Gnotuk is salty and 30 metres lower than Lake Bullen Merri which has fresh water and provides excellent fishing. Bullen Merri takes in The South Beach Reserve which has toilets, barbecue, boat ramp, parking, picnic and swimming facilities.
Botanic Gardens & Scenic Lookout: Access at the top of Park Lane, through the Caravan Park. These gardens were designed by William Guilfoyle in 1869. The scenic lookout takes in the panoramic plains of the western district, and features stunning views of the twin crater lakes, Bullen Merri & Gnotuk. The perfect place to picnic on a sunny day, the botanic gardens was formerly home to the oldest a statue of Robert Burns in the Southern Hemisphere (now on display in the local Council building), a reference to Scotland’s most famous national poet and recognition of the predominantly Scottish and Irish heritage brought to the area by settlers.
Stone Walls: The most important and extensive network of dry stone walls in Australia are located in the Corangamite District. These walls were built by skilled craftsmen from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The tradition was often handed down from father to son, creating stone-walling families. Most of the stones walls in this area were built after the gold-rush of the 1850’s to clear and divide the land and to form barriers to rabbits.
Camperdown Craft Market: first Sunday of each month from 9:00 a.m. in Finlay Avenue along the Princes Highway.
Golf: Camperdown Golf Club, Lakes Recreation Park via Park Lane. This 18-hole golf course is nestled between the twin crater lakes and provides a picturesque setting for a day on the green. Open to the public every day.
Lawn Bowls: Camperdown Bowling Club, Thornton Street − 5593 1693.
Lawn Bowls: Camperdown Golf Bowls, Lakes Recreation Park − 5593 1437.
